Family Photography Session Essential Tools

Let me be honest – after years of family sessions, I've learned that half the battle is just being prepared. Kids are unpredictable, weather changes, and sometimes your camera decides to act up. Here's what I always pack to keep things running smoothly.

My Camera Setup

Nikon Z5 + 35mm Lens - This combo is perfect for families. The Z5 is lightweight but still gives me gorgeous image quality, and 35mm lets me capture everyone without having to back up into traffic. Plus, it handles those crazy golden hour lighting situations like a champ.

Comfort Items (Trust Me on These)

Sunscreen - This one's for me! Outdoor sessions mean I'm in the sun for hours, and there's nothing worse than trying to focus on getting the perfect shot when you're getting fried. I learned this lesson the hard way.

Waterproof Blanket - Game changer for sitting poses. Kids can get messy, grass can be wet, and parents don't have to stress about their clothes. Win-win.

The Kid Whisperer Tools

Lollipops - My secret weapon (with parent permission, of course). They keep little ones happy and create the most genuine smiles.

Soft Plush Toy & Wooden Camera Toy - The plush toy calms nervous babies, and the wooden camera makes kids think they're photographers too. They actually look at my camera because they're copying me – it's genius.

Technical Stuff

Large Capacity SD Cards + Storage Case

I use either 64GB or 128GB cards and always have 2 in my camera (1 for original photos, and 1 for backup). The storage case keeps me organized so I don't accidentally reformat a card with someone's session on it.
